A spokesman for the Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club (MBGALAC) said some of the catches were more than 20kg and a large kingfish catch was a wonderful achievement. 

The spokesman said the species had been present around the wharf about 30 years ago, but it has been rare to hook or catch anything from the wharf. 

Club member Ken McCoombe said he had 24 hook ups off the wharf before actually landing a prize catch. 

Club members said some of the best results were achieved from casting stick baits and large poppers.  

The club offered its commiserations to the Melbourne based anglers who drove overnight to join in, but only achieved a couple of hook-ups.

In other areas, salmon are becoming more abundant at Tura Beach and also frequenting the headlands, with the club hearing good reports also from Haycock and Main beach. 

There are lots of sand crabs about with metal spinners the way to go. 

Unfortunately, cold currents have swept in again and with inland water temperatures down to about 12 degrees it had has put a real damper on returns. 

Those resilient and patient fishers have had some luck with reefs producing a few morwong, while the snapper have proved hard to find. Both soft plastics and pilchard baits are very effective.

Flathead are still available off Tura Beach, try 15-20 fathoms.  Drummer remain active along the rocky headlands, try cunjevoi, cooked prawns are also effective.

Gummy Shark are most active during the moon and good results have been reported from the Pambula River mouth area. 

Meanwhile, in the Bega River, bream are beginning to school in the upper reaches as well as estuary perch. 

Tailor and dusky flathead are still available in all the estuaries including Merimbula Lake.

The club is holding its salmon Sunday social at the Haycock Beach parking area this Sunday.

Organisers said they hoped to see a large turnout roll up for the morning fishing session with a barbecue lunch to run from 1pm. 

The club holds an open house at its Spencer Park clubrooms every friday from 6.30pm.
