The impacts of the massive East Coast Low storm experienced on the Far South Coast earlier this month is only now starting to wear off, with estuary fishing improving.

Not too much happening offshore with no recent reports of any kingfish activity at Montague Island, but there have been a few albacore reported out wide from Bermagui.
Having just spent a couple of days fishing the Mallacoota system last week, it was apparent the water was just now starting to clear and fish start to bite. It was a little slow but there were some decent fish up above 40cm.
Dash at the Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler had a great session on the Narooma inlet last week and reports: “Who would think in the middle of winter, in sub 15 degree water you would be successfully fishing with surface lures. Well someone forgot to tell the fish as today was as good as it gets on surface lures for Salmon, Bream, Trevally and Tailor all played the surface game today in the perfect overcast conditions. The mind blowing part of it all is that there were some bream and Trevally taken on surface lures in 4m of water while throwing them for Salmon. In total it was a 70+ fish day and i reckon half the fish were on surface lures, while others on light weighted plastics and a few on small metals. What a day! What an Inlet! Got to love Wagonga!”
Scotty at Bermi Bait & Tackle reports: Still some awesome fishing in Wallaga Lake at the present. Water temps in the lake are sitting around 14 degrees and most fish are feeding pretty actively on large schools of tiny white bait. Hoots managed a 90cm flatty, a few more in there high 70s early 80s have been working their way through our 4lb bream leaders while the big breambos continue to fish well. Offshore has been a touch hit and miss with Montague island producing mainly undersized kings with the odd better one in the mix.”
“Forward movement of this SST goes out to the 4th of July in the 1st image, predicting the fresh tide pushing the warmer water up somewhat and forcing it to contract and take the right shape for us. Basically a warm core eddy with areas of slack tide that will concentrate the fish somewhat. Longliners will be out off Merimbula and south tomorrow. Fishing where the water is still pushing in and below it on the back of a few better Bluefin coming in on the last trip for one boat whilst another had a bit of Broadbill, some Big Eye and Albacore. We saw saw a few smaller yellowfin come in from customers fishing yesterday but not today.”
Graham at Moruya Tackleworld meanwhile has also seen some good catches. On the Moruya River, some nice bream are being caught along the rocky edges from Ryan's creek down to the preddys wharf area. Luderick are being caught around the hole in the wall with some perch and jewies being caught around quarry wharf of a night time.
On the Tuross system, some nice bream are being caught around the oyster leases at the moment mainly on deep diving hard body lures like the Strada badgers and Diawa presso's Jewfish are still being caught on live poddies down the front around the boat shed area . Some nice bream and perch are also being caught up around bumbo .
And on the rocks and beaches, there have been good drummer and bream are being caught off most headlands at the moment with salmon and tailor in the gutters from Pedro point down to Goulburn workers using a nice fresh fish bait and beach worms . Down around the entrance to Coila has been producing good numbers of salmon and tailor caught on both salted pillies and ARMA metal slices
While offshore, there has been plenty of snapper around the 2-3 kilo mark being caught around the close in reefs in 20meters of water with gummy Sharks also coming up the burley trail . Blue spot flathead are out off the wind sock and down towards Congo , these fish are being caught using squid and fish bait. Try a paternoster rig with bait on the bottom hook and a soft plastic on the top. Thanks Graham.
Now here are the reports from our local fishing clubs:
Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club
Well we survived the storms and nobody had to wear gumboots for our trivia night and I am told that as usual it was another successful evening thanks to Charlie Bettini .
Even though we had 8 inches of water across the floor in the clubrooms we are now back to normal and on Friday night, June 24 we had a very enjoyable and cozy pizza night with everybody enjoying the heating, so bring your friends and family and enjoy a night by the water.
The enthusiasm of some of our junior members never ceases to amaze me and young Stephie Ovington has done it again while on holidays with her parents Mick and Annie and brother Shane. Much to Shane’s dismay Stephie landed the best GT of the trip at 95cm and 10Kg+. She then followed up with a nice broad-bar mackerel. Both these fish where landed in the last few days around the Lucinda Jetty. We also had Les and Sue Waldock’s grandkids Reid McNamarra and Cassidy James with some nice fish caught up the back of the inlet.
As usual the Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club rooms, situated on the inlet near the restaurants, will be open for fish stories, drinks and snacks from 4pm till 9pm on Friday. Visitors are most welcome to come along and have a chat with the members. – Jan Hemmingsen
Dalmeny Fishing Club
Sunday, June 19, Dalmeny Fishing Club held its monthly weigh-in .Due to the weather forecast and the rain that was predicted, it was only a small weigh-in. Graeme Sawyer was top score for the day with 120 points and lucky angler was Buzz. Thank-you to all the members for helping on the day. Next meeting will be our kids presentation day on July 17 with lots of activities and fun planned so parents make sure the kids don't miss out ! The annual AGM will also take place that day so we would like to see all our members present. Our Senior Presentation Night will be on Saturday, August 27 at Club Dalmeny so mark this date on your calendar (not to be missed ) – Kim Budin
BCC Social Anglers Club
Members of the Bermagui Country Club Social Anglers’ Club met earlier this month for their monthly get-together, enjoying a delightful barbecue lunch, courtesy of our very capable cooks, with a beautiful sponge to follow, celebrating all the June members’ birthdays. Once again, new members were welcomed by president Fran. Difficult fishing conditions did not enhance a result for those who competed in the monthly comp. However, a big plus for trying! Congratulations to the raffle winner Cherie with a consolation prize to Gerry. The July and August social get-together will be a casserole luncheon from members to enjoy.
Following the luncheon, President Fran opened the Annual General Meeting, where the following were elected into office: President - Fran; Vice Pres. - Brian; Secretary - Dawn; Treasurer - Cherie; Weigh Master - Ian; Publicity – Shirley; Committee – Gerry, Julie, Elaine and Penny. In the meantime, the annual fishing competition winners will be presented with their rewards at the November Christmas weekend away, which is under discussion. – Shirley Fogwell (On the Drift)
