On Wednesday, Member for Eden-Monaro Peter Hendy said a new mobile base station in Tathra would bring “a much-needed boost to mobile coverage, providing benefits to emergency service operators, businesses, and residents”.
Complaints about Tathra’s patchy service have been reported for years as a hindrance to local businesses, particular with the seasonal demand expected of a summer tourist destination.
Dr Hendy said the Coalition government would commit an additional $60million on top of the $160million already invested in mobile blackspots, bringing its total investment to $220million.
Telstra has previously said Tathra did not qualify for blackspot funding as it has “some” service.
However, Dr Hendy said a re-elected Coalition government would “invite mobile network operators to bid for this new funding to provide coverage in the identified locations”. Other locations identified in Eden-Monaro were Tumut, Bombala/Delegate and Carwoola
“The exact location of the tower for Tathra will be finalised in consultation with the local community and mobile service providers.”
