The kingfish have proved as fickle as ever, disappearing for most of last week and then showing up on Saturday afternoon for the Bowlo Club fishos lucky enough to get the timing right. There have also been reports of some hefty sand and tiger flathead in 35m off Tilba.

Estuaries continue to perform well and local fisherwoman Olivia Ford caught a beaut 74cm, 2.9kg flathead on Monday at the little jetty behind the Inlet cafe in Narooma. “I was targeting baitfish with a small hook, no sinker, chicken fillet. The flattie launched onto the fish I was reeling in and gave me the surprise of my life. It's a Personal Best!” Well done Olivia.
The Tuross locals have been at it again with Pam Feeley catching two nice mulloway last Wednesday night in Tuross Lake, on fresh squid and tailor. Don’t forget the closed season for Australian bass and estuary perch began on Sunday so let them go.
Eurobodalla Shire Council this week was making more improvements to the new Apex Park boat ramp adding a couple of new concrete slabs to improve launching at extreme low tide as well as widening but this work was halted when it was realised the permit with Marine Parks had just expired by a couple of days. Council is working to renew the paperwork and work should resume soon.
Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club president Les Waldock sent us a great yarn about he hooked a giant trevally on light gear while wading the flats at Fiji. His epic yarn about how managed to get the fish back to the beach can be read in full on our online fishing page. Click here for the story
Also online is a story about Narooma’s John Phillip witnessing an amazing event involving the resident seals and a school of mullet at Mill Bay. Click here for story
Now for some reports from the fishing clubs...
Bowlo fishos
Members of Club Narooma Bowlo Fishing Club enjoyed this nice weather for a great weekend of fishing with plenty keeping weighmaster Wayne busy. Now we were going to try and have a charter boat versus charter boat comp but poor old John Moore’s boat decided it was not playing.
So after cancelling the morning trip with the weather bad, the wind died and it was on again at 1pm and the boat had not even turned the motors off and there were two locked up into the kings and another seven had fishing rods bending, fishermen grunting and some fancy netting and gaffing took place.
Everybody got a good feed with some nice snapper and mowies also mixed into the catch and the funny thing was no seals around but every now and again a fish would be lost and there it was just out of sight a rather large tiger shark helping himself. Anyway the boat Dream Time can claim bragging rights this month by default but with luck John’s boat will be up and running next month for it to happen again.
Randall Setzer took overall winner with others in the mix Tanya Burr, who got her PB kingfish, Brenda Setzer, Peter Shakeshaft, Wayne Giffen, Adam Giffen, Dave Clark and Mick Kavic. There were some great whiting weighed-in and interesting to see some Tommy Ruffs and dart being caught along the beaches but most fishermen reported the beaches rather quiet up north with most action on southern beaches.
So with not much else to report, it’s a happy Mothers Day next Sunday and I hope the mums that turned up at the barbecue scored a winner with the scratchies they were given! – Fishfingers
NSGFC
Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club was very fortunate to have the duo, “Rags to Riches” entertain us last Friday with their unique and easy to listen to music. A huge thank you to Bev and Errol sharing their talent with our humble club. We also had bacon and egg rolls for sale. Thanks to John Scott, Sue and Jill for doing the catering.
We intend to keep this up so please enter this in your calendar. Last Friday of May is Friday the 27th, which will be a hamburger night with all the trimmings! Welcome to the following new members Daniel Betts, Henryk and Cathy Jansen, David and Karen Maltby. With July soon to be with us, the annual competitions have only May and June to run and be won. Lots of spaces still left to fill for entries and with the fishing so good at the moment, get organised and get out on the water.
Fishing has been wonderful around Narooma recently with the kingfish making an appearance in April as they did last year, the snapper and morwong keeping fish on the table and the reliable sand flathead always a fall back when things get quiet. Marlin are starting to slow after a frantic three months and reports of the odd yellowfin and albacore suggests Autumn is in full swing.
Length only competition is still anyone’s with John Scott jumping to the front with his marlin. Those close behind have to lift your game to catch John and with only eight weeks to do so, it can be done. Big mover this month was John Cathor, less than 100 points behind John Scott.
Now for a “True Fishing Term” – Catch and Release: A conservation motion that happens most often right before the local fish and game officer pulls over a boat that has caught over its limit. As usual the NSGFC rooms, situated on the inlet near the restaurants, will be open for fish stories, drinks and snacks from 4pm till 9pm on Friday. Visitors are most welcome. – Jan Hemmingsen
