The local volunteers gathered at Spencer Park in Merimbula to participate in a training workshop run by the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA).
They were trained in identifying species, seal evaluation and how to respond to marine mammal incidents, including rescues and rehab methods.
“The Far South Coast in an absolute hot-spot for seals, dolphins and whales so it was essential to have more trained rescuers,” Shone Lorigan from ORRCA said.
We’re coming into our busiest time of the year and it’s wonderful to have 15 new volunteer marine mammal rescuers on the Far South Coast.

“The 15 volunteers are now ready to go and will be on hand for the next call-out.”
Ms Lorigan said ORRCA can receive around seven to eight calls for different incidents all in the one day, especially during winter which is its busiest time.
ORRCA has a 24 Hour Hotline for people to report all injured or distressed marine mammals simply call 02 9415 3333.
