It is a fun one-day event and organisers said it attracts malibu surfers from up and down the coast from Sydney and Victoria to compete against an eager local contingent. 

There is a huge diversity in age as well, officials said, with youngsters known as grommets competing to some of the club’s oldest boardriders taking part. 

“The Malleable is a great opportunity for spectators to see malibu surfing by some of the best surfers on the coast competing for honours against some of Sydney and Victoria’s exponents of the long board,” event spokesman John Smythe said. 

The club has a series of prizes on offer and Smythe said they are awarded in different age categories over the day. 

Divisions include women’s, grommets, juniors, open, masters, veterans and grey grommets. 

“And a custom-built Bushrat surfboard will be the major prize for the winner of the inaugural Ben Mills Memorial Trophy,” Smythe said. 

The Malibu competition is one of the largest run locally and has been iconic on the surfing calendar. 

Smythe said it is a fantastic day for spectators to join in the fun and see some immense skill on display.

Competitors will meet at Merimbula’s Main Beach from 7am where the official venue will be decided based on the day’s conditions. 

Spectators are more than welcome and officials will post details at Main Beach should the location move on the day. 

An event sign on and draw will be completed at the Royal Williows Hotel in Pambula from 5.30pm on May 3 with the round one draw to go on display from 7pm to 7.30pm. 

Entry is $70 for adults and $50 for juniors and grommets under 18 and includes a t-shirt, all-day barbecue and prizes.
