Entrants were taught the different aspects of the sport as well as some of the techniques needed to rig and control a boat on the water. 

Organisers said the lessons were very constructive and by the end of the course, participants were in control of various sailing boats.

Officials said conditions were perfect to enjoy a day out on the water and congratulated everyone who took part. 

A number of club members were on hand to help tutor the students. 

The club has run a number of sailing school days and have been pleased with the community response as well as the excellent turnouts. 

The club has also been running its regular handicap and point score weekend races. 

In other club news, members acquired a new rescue boat after the previous one sank and had to be recovered during a race meet last year. 

“We successfully replaced our main rescue boat,” Secretary Tony Hastings explained.

“This took a lot of research, discussion, inspection of various options, and finally purchasing a good second-hand powerboat.”

“We’ve almost cleaned out the bank account, and thank Bendigo Bank for considering our sponsorship request – fingers crossed.”

It was a comedy of errors for the club when the boat went under last year.

It caused havoc for the officers of the day, but they laughed it off and said they were even able to refloat the boat and let it drain on its trailer. 

Members have been looking for a replacement since December. 

Despite the cost, Hastings said the replacement had come at a good time as the club is gearing up for its annual regatta. 

The regatta, which is the largest sailing event of the year for the club will be held on March 12-13. 

Hastings said preparations included recruiting an expert race official from Sydney to oversee all the action. 

The judge will be hosted locally thanks to Gateway Lifestyle Countryside Tathra.

Weekly club meets include two races on Saturdays, but the regatta would be a five-race event held over two days. 

Hastings said a highlight of the event would be a social dinner and get together on the Saturday night. 

The club is seeking a chef to ensure the dinner is a success.
