Ms Sharpe used the opportunity to reiterate her call for a ban on single use plastic bags and called on the government to introduce a container deposit scheme as soon as possible.
“I will be introducing a private member’s bill in February on Parliament’s return, on single use plastic bags. It will be modelled on the ACT legislation,” Ms Sharpe said.
Together, these actions will reduce waste, landfill and help minimise other negative environmental impacts of plastic bags, including to marine life,” she said.
Ms Sharpe said that every year tonnes of plastics were removed from wetlands across the state, and that these comprised mostly of plastic bags and plastic drinking containers.
