Darryl Hay, the owner of Merimbula Newsagency, was woken at 3.13am to a phone call from the security company that looks after his store informing him that the alarm had gone off.
When he arrived at the newsagency around 3.30am he saw that a brick had been thrown through one of the front windows.
Later that morning, Mr Hay and the Merimbula Police reviewed CCTV footage from out the front of the store.
The footage showed a man, believed to be left-handed, throw a brick through the window before attempted to push the rest of the glass through as well as trying to force the door open with a screwdriver before giving up and leaving the scene.
Mr Hay said the man was wearing a distinctive tracksuit, a hoodie, white gloves and a pair of thongs.
Mr Hay has posted the CCTV footage to Facebook in the hopes that someone will recognise the man.
