This is the seconding the writers have received a grant from the Mumbulla Foundation and president of the Writers of the Far South Coast, Amanda Dalziel, said the grants saved the group.
“The grant in 2014 really pulled us out of trouble, we were circling the drain and thinking about folding as an organisation but the grant enabled us to continue to exist,” Ms Dalziel said.
The writers were given a $1000 cheque when the Mumbulla Foundation’s present their grants. The foundation shared around $75,000 to over 30 different community groups from Bermagui to Eden.
The writers’ grant is to be used to subsidise their workshops, they try to run about 10 of these each year.
At each of their meetings they start off by offering constructive help to writers who express their skills in poetry, short stories, articles, scripts and essays.
The afternoon session is usually a workshop featuring a writer or subject area such as writing for children, the dreaded writers’ block, getting your work published, to name a few.
The Writers of the Far South Coast work hard to get professional writers and writing coaches in to help with their workshops but unfortunately this is incredibly expensive.
“We only use Australian Society of Authors rates once a year as it can cost around $880 per day to get a person in. On top of that we have to provide food and accommodation,” Ms Dalziel said.
“Because of this we try to be a little bit thrifty and approach workshop presenters who won’t charge and arm and a leg, nevertheless it is expensive and we are incredibly grateful for the grant which really keeps our organisation going.”
The group’s first meeting of the year will be on February 20 at Club Sapphire. The manuscript workshop will run from 10-12 followed by a presentation on self publishing at 1. Anyone who is interesting in writing is more then welcome to attend.
