Inspired by the vibrant and swinging music that poured out of America in the 30s and 40s, vocalist Hetty Kate and trumpet player Dan McLean have compiled a collection of sparkling songs into their album "The Umbrella Man".
These classics, made famous by the darlings of cabaret and popular music, are sure to have you up and tapping your feet.
Born in Hampshire, England, and growing up with Doris Day and Frank Sinatra albums, Hetty moved to Melbourne with her family at a young age and was inspired by the city’s thriving music scene.
After studying classical singing, she returned to her first love, the Great American Songbook, and has since carved out a career as one of the country’s foremost interpreters of popular songs from yesteryear.
Her sweet sound, clear tone and unshakeable sense of swing are all a perfect fit for the music she loves to sing.
Inspired by singers including Peggy Lee, June Christy and Ella Fitzgerald, Hetty leads a number of bands and has released six albums including two with ABC Jazz.
Hetty is a natural-born all-round entertainer with an infectious sense of fun, and is excited about coming to perform in Merimbula.
Band leader, arranger, composer, educator and trumpet player Dan Mclean is no stranger to swing music. Leading his own popular big band in Canberra and playing in many groups in the region, he is often lauded for his exciting and energetic playing.
A popular band leader for the lindy-hop and swing dance community, Dan brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the bandstand.
Backing them will be Valdis Thomann on trombone, Greg Stott on guitar, Wayne Kelly on piano, James Luke on double bass and Aaron McCoullough on drums.
With these five outstanding musicians, Hetty and Dan will showcase their new songs, as well as favourites from The Great American Songbook.
The Club Sapphire Bistro opens at 6pm and music will commence at 7.30pm. Meals can either be eaten in the Bistro, or ordered and eaten at leisure while listening to the music.
Cost is $15 for jazz club members and $20 for visitors. Table bookings can be made on 6495 9853 or will be available at the door.
