Steff Wills, a 24-year-old Merimbula local and Bega SES volunteer will feature in tomorrow’s, Saturday November 28, episode of Channel 10’s new series Storm Season.
At this time last year, when the show was filmed, Ms Wills was living in Wollongong and volunteering with the Coniston Unit SES.
Ms Wills will feature in the six-part series alongside six other brave souls, taking a behind-the-scenes look at their often intense and dangerous life-saving work in challenging conditions.
“It is really exciting that this show has gone ahead, not just for me but for the SES,” Ms Wills said.
“I am just one person of thousands of volunteers so it seems strange to be in the limelight but it is great that people will have more of an understanding of what the SES does.
“The show will hopefully help people understand the risks involved with severe storms and provide tips of what people can do before, during and after a storm to stay safe and reduce damage.”
Ms Wills has become extremely passionate about the SES ever since she joined more than five years ago.
“My brother joined first, and he told me all these amazing stories about helping people and learning awesome skills,” she said.
“My SES team and my SES friends are like my family now. We are all so close.”
All of Ms Wills family will be tuning in to watch Saturday’s episode which will air at 4pm. All the Storm Season episodes will also be available to watch at www.tenplay.com.au.
The program is from a partnership between NRMA Insurance and the NSW SES.
Storm season predominantly occurs between October and March, with NRMA research showing many people significantly underestimate the dangers of a severe storm. During April’s severe weather the insurance company fielded over 50,000 storm related claims alone.
Along with the television show, Steff Wills also features in an SES ‘get ready’ advertising campaign aimed at encouraging people to properly prepare for the storm season.
