Good conditions offshore were a boon for anglers over the long weekend with respectable catches of morwong, snapper and flathead all along the local reefs from Eden to Bermagui. Best time is always early morning and evening with baits ranging from squid heads to pilchards. Depths of 22 to 25 fathoms give good results for sand and tiger flathead.

At its presentation for the Col Russell Memorial Fishing Competition held at Tathra last Sunday, president Ray Spencer commented that the number of morwong and snapper returned were much better than for many years. This bodes well for a good season for anglers along the Sunshine Coast.
Lots of bluebottles were sighted showing that warmer currents are now flowing southwards. Salmon are about but remain patchy on the local beaches and headlands. Drummer are responding well to cunjevoi or peeled prawns. A good spot is the headlands near Pambula.
There are virtually lines of whales offshore frolicking their way southwards to Antarctica and are a great sight when outside fishing. Luderick, salmon and the occasional kingfish can be caught from the wharf at Merimbula and squid are prevalent just on dark. Tailor and trevally are about in the Merimbula Top Lake and the estuaries are coming to life with some fine bream and dusky flathead reported.
