The members of the ensemble are Bill McLean (banjo), John Moffatt (sousaphone/bass), John Bolton (piano), Bob Porter (reeds) and Paul Dion (drums).
They were all mates of the late and much missed saxophonist Ed Davis.
Ed had a number of friends who gathered from time to time at his Wallagoot gallery and home, Bilyara, to play jazz and yarn over coffee.
During Ed’s final illness, these jam and chat sessions continued quite regularly on Tuesday mornings.
As something of a tribute to Ed and his love of jazz, a handful of these friends formed The Bilyara Tuesday Jazz Ensemble, specifically for the October 2015 gathering of the Down South Jazz Club.
Bill McLean, John Moffatt and Bob Porter have long been associated with the Merimbula Jazz Festival and the Down South Jazz Club and have performed for both on numerous occasions.
Bob Porter regularly plays with The Jazz Pack, based in Tilba but considered a local group.
Bob will be remembered also as a member of Mark Bolsius’s Rossolino Twins who played a regular Friday-night gig at the Rockpool Café.
Paul Dion, composer, playwright and accomplished performer, is well known and much valued locally for his contribution to Merimbula’s musical life.
John Bolton is a classically-trained pianist who early on developed an interest in the popular music of his youth.
He has played at receptions and restaurants and, on a more impromptu basis, at pubs, parties, retirement homes and dance halls.
The Club Sapphire Bistro opens at 6.00 pm with its extensive menu, and music will commence at 7.30 pm.
Meals can either be eaten in the Bistro, or ordered, collected and eaten at leisure while listening to the music.
Cost is $15 for jazz club members and $20 for visitors. Table bookings can be made with Aileen or Kevin Walsh on 6495 9853 or will be available on the night at Club Sapphire.
