Sapphire Coast Active Kids Playgroup, under the auspices of Playgroups NSW, provides an opportunity for babies, toddlers and children up to school age, to engage in active play and exercise, within the formal playgroup environment, encouraging social connections for children and their carers.
One of the organisers of the new playgroup, Theresa Smith said: “My idea for the playgroup was inspired by my elder son Joshua, who was never content with passive craft activities, and preferred to run, jump and climb on any surface he could reach.
“That, together with the current concerns about childhood obesity, and the need to encourage activity and exercise from a young age, inspired some friends and me, to establish a playgroup dedicated to activity and exercise for pre-school aged children.”
The group has purchased equipment with the grant monies awarded by the Mumbulla Foundation.
Mrs Smith said: “So far we have had mothers, fathers, grandparents and other carers come along with their children on a Thursday to meet other children and carers and to exercise and play.”
The group plans to undertake fundraising activities and seek further grant funds to go towards the purchase of more exercise equipment as well as attracting local mothers with dance or exercise qualifications, to provide occasional sessions for children attending the playgroup.
Playgroup sessions are every Thursday during term time, 10am to 12 noon. The first two visits are at no cost, and thereafter, cost will initially be $2 per child. Membership of Playgroup NSW must then also be taken up, at $39 per year which can be done on-line.
