The Rotary club of Merimbula sponsored a team of three students from Eden Marine High to attend the weekend debate.
Jaid Boundy, Callum McLaughlin and Verin Sampson made up the team representing the country of Vietnam.
The debate which was held in the parliamentary chamber over two days is run precisely as a United Nations Assembly would be, with a director general controlling the 27 countries represented, on current world issues covering nuclear disarmament, regulating international migration, the elimination of violence against women and girls, the situation in the South China Seas and the protection of human rights and freedoms while countering terrorism.
The 27 teams each representing a country were made up of 70 students from as far a field as Delorraine, Tasmania to Tweed Heads.
Each team was expected to represent the position of their country within the debate on each topic.
The topics were unknown prior to the Assembly sitting and so each team had to research and prepare their presentation on the day while the other countries were presenting their case to the Assembly. Each team had one computer and only three minutes to present their case for or against.
The young adults displayed no preordained or secular attitudes, and this ensured a very lively and mature debate.
This youth activity is one of many available through the sponsorship of local Merimbula and Pambula Rotary clubs. Please contact Bill De jong on 0424 346 982 if you have any interest in being part of either Rotary or Rotary Youth activities.
