The band consists of Ted Vining on drums, Bob Sedergreen on piano, Gareth Hill on bass, and they will be joined by special guest Matt Kimber on vocals.
Ted Vining has been a cornerstone of Australian jazz for many years and has toured with many US jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderley and Lee Konitz. He has recorded with Alan Lee, Don Burrows, Bob Gebert, Bernie McGann, Brian Brown, Musiikki Oy, The Big One, Blow and the Ted Vining Trio. Ted has also contributed to the music scene as the artistic director of the Moomba Jazz Festival, inaugural Queensland Jazz co-ordinator (Australian Council) and as executive director of the Montsalvat International Jazz Festival 1995/96.
Pianist Bob Sedergreen is widely regarded as a national treasure and his position in Australian music is unquestionable. He was a core member of the Brian Brown Quartet and has been fundamental to the identity of the Ted Vining trio for over four decades. In addition to being acclaimed as a soloist, Bob has been a choice for jazz luminaries Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderley, Phil Woods, Ritchie Cole, Milt Jackson, Jimmy Witherspoon and many more. Bob was recently awarded the Ken Myer Medallion for his contribution to the performing arts, the first musician/educator to receive this prestigious award and has lectured at the Victorian College of the Arts and the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Music. He has toured extensively both around Australia and overseas, including Canada, Malaysia and Europe and has been advisor to the Montsalvat International Jazz Festival.
Gareth Hill began playing music at age eight as a violinist, and later switched to double bass and electric bass in a style that makes excellent use of his combined skills and studies in classical and jazz music. He completed a Bachelor of Music (jazz) with Honours and a Master of Philosophy (Music) at the ANU School of Music and is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Tasmania. He is a member of many emerging Melbourne based bands including Slow Code and The End. Additionally, Gareth has performed with jazz greats and is a member of the renowned Blow.
Guest vocalist Matt Kimber is based in Bega. He has been singing for the past 25 years, during which time he has won numerous vocal competitions around Australia. His voice has been compared to that of Sinatra, Presley and Michael Bublé. Members and guests of the Down South Jazz Club have had the pleasure of listening to his relaxed style many times and look forward to his accompanying the Ted Vining Trio.
The Club Sapphire bistro opens at 6 pm and music will commence at 7.30pm. Meals can either be eaten in the bistro, or ordered and eaten at leisure while listening to the music. Cost is $15 for jazz club members and $20 for visitors. Table bookings can be made by ringing Aileen or Kevin on 6495 9853, or will be available at the door
