The overwhelming vote last November to reject the board's proposal to amalgamate with the Bowling Club saw the end of a period of considerable disharmony within the membership. Since then and despite the significant costs attributed to the amalgamation push, the board has delivered a strong financial performance for which it deserves credit.
On the other hand its failure to consult with members on new directions continues to be a problem - the current outdoor smoking area extension being the prime example.
It is now time to consider new directions for the club following October's AGM and elections. At this stage it is unclear whether some or all existing club directors will be standing for re-election. Given that the board was united in its support of the amalgamation proposal an early indication of election intentions would be a reasonable expectation of members.
There are three possible election scenarios:
1. All board members seek re-election - in which case members will have a choice between them and other candidates based on past performance and future expectation;
2. Some board members seek re-election - raising the same possibilities; or
3. No board members stand for re-election - in which case an entirely new board will be elected.
In each scenario the possibility exists for the addition of new directors to the board for the next three years. Candidates for election will need to bring with them experience and expertise in financial management and planning, knowledge of club management and corporations law, member relations, communications and a commitment to the future of the club.
It is not my intention to stand for election but I am willing to facilitate communication and collaboration between aspiring board directors between now and the election.
This will involve covering the areas of expertise, getting to know each other, being briefed on the requirements of club directors beyond the monthly board meetings as well as considering possible future club services to members.
Anyone who wishes to throw their hat in the ring can contact me by email at david.kindon@gmail.com. I intend to establish a secure online meeting place for participants to discuss these issues.
