FOR locals and visitors to the Narooma area, beach fishing is still the best option for ensuring a feed of fresh fish. With some excellent salmon, tailor, flathead and sharks the main targets.
Many fishers under-value the eating qualities of Australian salmon, with many ‘bloody’ fish it’s important to first bleed the fish, then place into an ice slurry. A simple recipe for salmon is:
1. Remove any red meat from the fillet
2. Season some plain flour with salt and pepper and mixed herbs & maybe some powdered garlic and cover the salmon fillets in it (usually by shaking them with the flour in a plastic bag).
3. Beat up a small egg and a cup or so of milk. Dip the flour coated fillets in the liquid then into some pre-heated oil in a frypan - or deep fryer.
4. Fry until golden brown & cooked through but don't overcook or they'll become dryish. You can cook tailor the same way. Remember only good with fresh salmon.
As there isn’t a candlestick maker in Narooma, the local butcher (Whitey) and baker (Mick) both did their best when they landed some nice bluefin tuna last Sunday, proving that reality can be better than fairy tales.
The bluefin have been approx 50 kilometres offshore this week, which has limited the number of boats able to effectively target these tackle testers.
If the warm water eddies start to form closer to shore the tuna chasers will be out there in force.
The water temperature is now what would be considered ‘normal’ for this time of year, with a fairly constant 16.5 - 17c from a couple of miles offshore out to the Tuna grounds.
Reports from local estuaries have been fairly unimpressive this week, with only a few fishers trying to catch very illusive fish.
Brou Lake appears to have been the best option, with a couple of nice bream up to 40cm being landed, but there is a lot of water between those fish.
Fishing Joke of the Week: I was fishing with my Italian mate Mario. I said ‘I’m bored - how can we pass the time?’ Mario said ‘We could have a Debate!’ I said ‘No thanks I bought sandwiches’.
Fishing Soap Box: Eurobodalla council again plans to close the Apex Park boat ramp in August for three weeks for the installation of the floating pontoon. Something not to look forward to!

Spearing bluefin tuna
The bluefin tuna run continued on the Far South Coast last week, at least till the latest East Coast Low struck and they were a long way out!
The Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler reported that Benn Boulton from Charter Fish Narooma took out a few keen Sydney spearo’s aboard Nitro on Tuesday.
The result was a double hook up! Followed by more than three hours of bluefin mayhem as the tuna school that ranged from 50-100kg was easily kept boat side using cubes.
Benn reckon you could have caught as many fish as you wanted, but yesterday was the day for the spearo's.
After broken spears and busted guns the lads managed three nice bluefin around the 60kg mark, although bigger fish up to the 100kg left them under gunned so to speak!
Remember the bag limit is now one bluefin per person!
