Jazz Quest organiser, Paul Dion said: “The younger generation is the future of jazz. People often forget that major jazz stars such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker were at the peak of their careers during their late teens and early 20s. With this in mind the very popular Jazz Quest competition has been designed for the 25-year-olds and under.
“Many of those who take part are still in their final years of school and have already reached professional level.
“The Lakeview Hotel has donated $1500 in prize money and this will go some way towards helping the best of the best with their musical studies.
“Following the Jazz Quest the late night jam session Bebop and beyond sees the younger players perform alongside the more experienced players often with dynamic and innovative music making.”
The Merimbula Jazz Festival starts on Friday, June 5 at 5pm and runs through to Monday, June 8, 4pm. Many varied styles of music from traditional to ultra modern, including the ever-popular big swing band sounds, are featured across eight venues.
