As part of a $130,000 community grants program, the club has funded the Woodies’ new $1160 sliding compound saw (drop saw), which is already being put to good use.
Woodies president Des Jeffery said the group’s previous saw was 25 years old.
“It had done a lot of hard work, and was worn out,” he said.
“This is allowing us to do a lot more finer work.”
Some of the work being crafted with the saw includes new tables and stools for the Original Gold Rush Colony at Mogo, which will help it cope with the 140 school students expected there over the following month.
The Woodies is a non-profit organisation that supports the community and under privileged groups. It has been running since 1987 and has produced thousands of wooden creations.
It has 50 members, four of whom are female.
The group meets every Monday, Wednesday and every third Friday at the Original Gold Rush Colony.
“We are a pretty versatile group,” Mr Jeffery said.
“We have people from all walks of life; engineers, metal workers, builders and all. “We have fantastic wood-turners who do great work.
“Val Byrne oversees our toymaking and she is very exacting in her standards.”
