At 11am on Wednesday, May 21, the pages of a children’s picture book were turned simultaneously as young children around Australia, including Merimbula, sat spellbound as a story read to them about elephants unfolded.
National Simultaneous Storytime celebrates and acknowledges the vital work being done in libraries, schools and communities around Australia to develop young people's literacy and numeracy skills.
The picture book chosen for the 2014 annual event ‘Too many elephants in this house’ is written by talented and original author, Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrated by Andrew Joyner.
About 140,000 children across Australia took part in the event.
Bega Valley Shire Council’s children’s librarian, Anne Moore said, the event was organised by the Australian Library and Information Association to promote the value of reading and literacy, promote the value of books, promote an Australian writer and publisher and to promote story time activities in public libraries and communities around the country.
