In the NSW Southern Regional Transport Plan of March 2014, the NSW government has listed the roundabout as an approved item for the financial year 2013-14 costing $300,000. The document also states that the anticipated start of work was to be March this year.
The roundabout will eventually form a key part of the Merimbula bypass and take traffic along Park Street and around Palmer Street before exiting at the junction of Monaro and Market Streets. The intersection has long been considered problematic because of the angles of the adjoining roads. Even redesigning the intersection as a roundabout is not without issues as it will have to accommodate trucks coming south of Merimbula Drive and having to make a very acute angled right hand turn to enter the bypass.
Bega Valley Shire Council’s manager of infrastructure, water and waste, Wayne Sartori said that the roundabout’s design had been finalised. “Council is awaiting estimates and works program from utility services namely Telstra and Essential Energy and negotiations have commenced with the affected property owner,” Mr Sartori said. “Construction is being scheduled for later in 2014 pending the successful outcome of these negotiations,” he added.
