It was about 7.20pm on Sunday, April 13 when Vic Poole decided that the carving knife needed sharpening for the Sunday roast and he started to tackle the job with an old-fashioned wheel. Vic said: “I got started and then I missed the sharpener and saw that I had filleted my finger.”
His wife, Rosemary took up the story: “I was on the phone and returned to the kitchen to see blood everywhere. We did no more than drive up to the hospital where the nurse on duty said that we’d better have a doctor look at Vic’s finger. The doctor was a visiting medical officer from New Zealand and said that it had to be stitched.
"We couldn’t have got to Bega."

“Vic had five stitches and the service was excellent. We couldn’t have got to Bega. I just don’t drive that distance at night and especially with the problem of animals running out too.”
Rosemary said: “I just thought Pambula hospital was close and I was very grateful there was someone there to receive us.”
