“Watch out for the Plovers!” said our neighbour Glenda. “They have laid eggs in the middle of that vacant block, and don’t take kindly to our walking near them – much less our dogs.”

I was so impressed by the commitment of those two little birds. Day and night one was sitting on the nest while the other stood guard. They only attacked if their eggs were threatened. Some marauding Currawongs were driven off, a cat and a dog were sent packing. Day and night these tireless little birds maintained their vigil. They gave their all to protect their treasure - their precious eggs.
Once God in human form said “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field—and to get the treasure, too.”
Evidently the man was able to keep his treasure, but not the poor little plovers. Last Saturday night in the early hours of the morning a mean human stamped on the precious nest and on Sunday morning the plovers were gone.
Humans are good at wrecking other’s dreams. Do you have dreams? Do you have treasure? A favourite collection? Jewels? Investments? No matter what they are they stay behind in this world when you journey to the next. But there is one kind of treasure that will always be with you. The one who can take us safely into the next world says “Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves”. Perhaps it makes sense to find out from Him how to make all this happen.
