The cars from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) were taking part in the club’s Fly the Flag eight day tour.
Organised by the All British Classic Car Club and sponsored by the RACV the rally started in Melbourne Park, visited Bairnsdale and Cann River before a two-night stop in Merimbula.
Rally organiser, Tony Pettigrew, said he was always looking for somewhere new to take the rally and Merimbula was a personal favourite. Asked how the 400 members enjoyed their stay, Mr Pettigrew said: “They absolutely loved it. They visited the wider area taking in Tilba Tilba and Bermagui too.”
While Mr Pettigrew wasn’t able to put a figure on the value of the event to Merimbula he pointed out that it would have injected considerable funds into the local economy with two dinners and two breakfasts at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club, 210 rooms booked for two nights, petrol for the cars, presents and “countless cups of coffee”.
The rally left the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club under starters orders from comedienne, Denise Drysdale heading for Candelo, Cooma, Bombala and ultimately Yarra Glen Racecourse.
