A decision on the rezoning of land at the entrance to Tura Beach is hostage to a condition that a full complement of councillors is present in the council chamber to debate this controversial issue.

While a rescission motion was successful, which eliminates a previous council resolution that the land be zoned as R5 large lot with 1 hectare lot size, a notice of motion to change the zoning to B5 business development, was not put at council’s March 5 council meeting.
Crs Fitzpatrick, Allen and Britten chose the words of their rescission motion carefully. It read: ”That the resolution made by council on February 12 2014 to rezone Lots 33 and 34 to residential R5 be rescinded and that the matter be relisted before a full sitting of all councillors for further determination as to the rezoning of these lots for exhibition.”
Given that Cr Allen was absent from the council meeting it was expedient that the rescission had accommodated for the likelihood of an absentee, without which the end result could have mirrored the February 12 decision.
The rescission motion was supported by the majority of the councillors – namely Crs Taylor, McBain, Fitzpatrick, Britten, Mawhinney and Tapscott. Crs Hughes (Greens) and Seckold voted against.
Cr Britten moved that his notice of motion: ”That council resolve to rezone Lots 33 and 34 DP243029 Tura Beach Drive, Tura Beach to a B5 business development zone” be deferred until a full meeting of the council.
It was seconded by Cr Mawhinney.
The motion was put and carried with all councillors with the exception of Cr Hughes voting in favour.
Cr Britten advised that he will be absent from the March 26 council meeting as he will be representing the council at a tourism conference.
Whether there will be a full complement of councillors at the April meeting is anyone’s guess.
