Member for Eden-Monaro, Peter Hendy has said that the federal government is committed to the Eden Port re-development and has promised to work closely with member for Bega, Andrew Constance and the Bega Valley Shire Council to bring the project on stream.

In a letter addressed to the Merimbula News Weekly, Dr Hendy said: “The $10 million pledge that the Coalition made during the election campaign stands and it does not require separate approvals as to whether or not it will go ahead. I have reconfirmed that with the Minister for Infrastructure’s office since the election.”
Dr Hendy went on to say: “This funding is quite separate from any Regional Development Australia scheme and in no way dependent on it.
“In addition, based on discussions with the Minister’s staff, I believe that the $10 million should start flowing before the end of the current financial year.”
After the initial relief of hearing that the money had been awarded by the former federal Government as part of the Regional Development Australia fund, there were concerns raised when a spokesperson for Warren Truss, Minister of the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development (formerly Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport), said that the new government was “not beholden” to any RDAF grants that had not been contracted before the election.
Dr Hendy said that he was seeking to reassure the community that the funding would go ahead. “This infrastructure investment promises to deliver important economic benefits to the Eden area and the wider Eden-Monaro region,” he said.
